SUSPENSION OF ETNS ACTIVITIES
At its meeting in Reykjavik on 20-24 June 2005 the Electronic Communications Committee (ECC) decided, following the proposal of its Working Group Numbering, Naming and Addressing (WG NNA), to suspend all activities as the European Telephony Numbering Space (ETNS) administrator till the identified weaknesses of the ETNS are resolved. This decision has been taken as the telecommunications sector is facing new challenges and considering that the ECC does not see any triggers within its competence to change the current situation of the ETNS.
The suspension of ETNS activities means in practice that WG NNA will not consider any new ESI designations. Existing ESIs, however, can be handled by the Registrar including new number applications.
Further information on this decision and the ETNS can be obtained from ERO/Jukka Rakkolainen.
The decision comes into force on the date published on this website.
What is ETNS? The European Telephony Numbering Space (ETNS) is a European numbering scheme parallel to existing national numbering schemes and used for the provision of pan-European services.
The objective of the ETNS is to promote pan-European services by making numbers available in circumstances where neither national nor global numbers are suitable or available.
A European code — 3883 — which is used in the same way as a country code, allows pan-European companies, organisations and individuals to facilitate Europe-wide access to their services via an ETNS Number.
